A blanket of smog hangs over a street in Bangladesh capital Dhaka choked by thousands of vehciles January 4. Traffic system in the city has virtually broken down ahead of Moslem Eid al-Fitr festival due on Saturday or Sunday depending on sighting of the moon. Municipal officials say at least half of Dhaka's nine million people are leaving the city to celebrate Eid with friends and relatives in the countryside. Police said two-stroke engine minicabs which emit leaded black smoke are to mainly blame for the city's high pollution level.
