An activist holds a portrait of Jainal Hazari, a likely poll candidate
for the Awami League party, in protest against police harassment in the
southeastern town of Feni, 150 km (94 miles) from the capital Dhaka on
August 26, 2001. Former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia Bangaldesh
National party (BNP) branded Hazari as a "godfather" - a charge denied
by him and the League - and demanded his arrest, forcing him to go into
hiding. Troops and police raided Hazari's home in Feni on SAugust 17
and seized several weapons but they failed to arrest him.
