(L-R) Standing are his son Christian, his second wife Viviane Baro and his two daughters Annie and Monique. A Christian Democrat, Vanden Boeynants led the government between 1966 and 1968 and again made headlines when he was kidnapped and held for 30 days in January, 1989. He was hospitalised on December 6, 2000 suffering from heart trouble and died on January 9, aged 81.
