Tarqui shows vegetables from his kitchen garden in El Alto
Hector Tarqui shows vegetables from his kitchen garden, where he grows over 15 different kinds of vegetables, in El Alto on the outskirts of La Paz May 13, 2009. Growing vegetables in El Alto, a sprawling shantytown which is some 4,000 meters above sea level, is not easy because of low temperatures throughout the year. Some 1,500 families, including Tarqui's, are taking part in a project that aims to fight malnutrition in El Alto, a city of nearly 1 million people, by encouraging them to grow vegetables in small greenhouses.
