TAILANDIA, Brazil
A view of logs made from the sawdust collected from the mills that cut Amazon trees, at a factory recently built by the municipal government of Tailandia, 180 km (112 miles) south of Belem at the mouth of the Amazon River, February 21, 2008. The pressed logs are being marketed as an ecological solution to at least two problems - the cutting of virgin trees to be made into charcoal and sold to industries and businesses that use it as fuel, and the contamination of the region by the enormous quantities of sawdust that the sawmills produce when cutting trees into planks for the construction and furniture industries.
