A worker cleans an empty corral at one of Brazil's largest slaughterhouses which suspended activities a week earlier due to a foot-and-mouth infection in the southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul, Alegrete May 18, 2001. Brazilian authorities killed over 300 cattle over the week to wipe out the highly contagious disease, which hindered beef exports to most of the region's markets.
