Revellers wearing indigenous costumes dance in unison during the Parintins jungle carnival deep in the heart of the Amazon forest July 2, 2006. Two rival teams named after oxen competed in a spectacle recounting indian tales, local history and the region's cattle ranching roots. The carnival-style event began only 41 years ago, but its roots date back to 1913 when roving bands of singers donned bulls costumes and danced in the streets to improvised lyrics.
