Brasilia, Brazil -
RANCHS HANDS FORM A BLOCKADE AROUND FARMLAND INVADED BY LANDLESS
MOVEMENT IN BRASILIA.
Members of Brazil's landless movement occupy a ranch in central Brazil,
just 25 miles (40 km) from the presidential palace in the capital
Brasilia, July 2, 2003. After an initial respite in invasions of unused
farm land, the MST has launched fresh occupations arguing its members
are too hungry to wait on lengthy land redistribution bureaucracy. Some
200 families loyal to the MST have invaded an 800-hectare (1,950-acre)
ranch owned by Brazilian businessman Mario Zinato. The standoff is just
part of a wave of looting, blockades and protests by the MST, to force
President Lula da Silva to make good on promises to give land to
Brazil's rural poor. REUTERS/Jamil Bittar
