Brasilia, Brazil -
LANDLESS PEASANTS SET UP DEFENSES AT FARM THEY INVADED IN CENTRAL
BRAZIL.
Landless peasants man defenses, including a small lookout tower, around
land they have occupied on a ranch in central Brazil, July 2, 2003.
After an initial respite in invasions of unused farm land, the Landless
Movement (MST) has launched fresh occupations arguing its members are
too hungry to wait on lengthy land redistribution bureaucracy. Some 200
families loyal to the MST have invaded an 800-hectare (1,950-acre)
ranch owned by Brazilian businessman Mario Zinato. The standoff is just
part of a wave of looting, blockades and protests by the MST, to force
President Lula da Silva to make good on promises to give land to
Brazil's rural poor. REUTERS/Jamil Bittar
