FILE PHOTO OF YANOMAMI INDIANS WITH MILITARY PERSONNEL IN THE BRAZILIAN
AMAZON.
With tribal bows and arrows, Yanomami indians meet face-to-face with
military personnel at a remote airstrip in the Amazon jungle, during an
operation to clear out wildcat miners from their reservation, in this
file photo from May 14, 1998. Mercedes Meier, a Venezuelan now living
in Florida, has created a screenplay about the indians titled "Yanomami
- The Story Behind the Diamond." Based loosely on the true story of the
1993 murder of 16 Yanomami indians by miners, Meier has even considered
dreamed of Tom Hanks and Helen Hunt to fill the lead duo. It portrays a
jaded reporter who gives up his job in search of the Yanomamis in
Venezuela, and an advertising professional filming a commercial in the
Amazon. REUTERS/William Schomberg/Files
