The moon is seen during totality as it is completely covered by the earth's shadow, turning the moon.....
The moon is seen during totality as it is completely covered by the earth's shadow, turning the moon a red-orange colour in the sky over Loch Lomond in Scotland January 9, 2001. During the three hour long eclipse the earth's shadow moves over the surface of the moon until finally eclipsing it at 1950GMT, and when it is totally covered by the earth's shadow, the moon turns orange as the light from the sun is bent and filtered by the earth's atmosphere.
