SYM is a Jesuit-run project seeking to prevent the spread of AIDS as well as to alleviate the suffering of those affected. According to the African Jesuit AIDS Network, in late 2011, it was reported that more than 60,000 Burundians needed treatment for HIV, but less than 25,000 had access to antiretroviral drugs.
