Elaine Chao makes remarks following President-elect George W. Bush announced her nomination to the position of Labor Secretary January 11, 2001. Chao was a former deputy secretary of the Department of Transportation in the administration of Bush's father and replaces Linda Chavez, who withdrew following allegations of improprieties in dealings with illegal immigrants.
