Former Khmer Rouge S-21 prison chief Duch stands in a courtroom during a pre-trial in Phnom Penh
Former Khmer Rouge S-21 prison chief Kaing Guek Eav, better known as Duch, stands in a courtroom during a pre-trial in Phnom Penh December 5, 2008. Duch is charged with crimes against humanity during the 1975-79 Khmer Rouge reign of terror, one of the darkest chapters of the 20th century. At least 14,000 people deemed to be opponents of Pol Pot's "Year Zero" revolution passed through the barbed-wire gates of S-21, also known as Tuol Sleng. Fewer than 10 are thought to have lived to tell the tale.
