Newly sworn-in Supreme Court Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin (C) is offered pens by Mel Cappe, president of the Privy Council (L); Prime Minister Jean Chretien (2-R); and the Governor General's Aide-de-camp Jocelyn Turgeon (R); as Governor General Adrienne Clarkson (2-L) looks on at a ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa, January 12. McLachlin, who joined the Supreme Court in 1989, replaced outgoing Chief Justice Antonio Lamer.
