Newly elected Chilean President Ricardo Lagos (R) waves to the crowd as his defeated opponent right-winger Joaquin Lavin looks on in Santiago, January 16. Lagos, a 61-year-old ex dissident and former education and public works minister will be Chile's first Socialist President since General Augusto Pinochet overthrew Salvador Allende. Lagos won 51.31 percent of the votes versus Lavin who received a 48.68 percent.
