Newly elected Chilean President Ricardo Lagos (R) and his defeated opponent, right-winger Joaquin Lavin, shake hands in Santiago, January 16. Lagos, a 61-year-old former dissident and former education and public works minister, will be Chile's first Socialist President since Salvador Allende. Lagos defeated Lavin with 51.31 percent of the votes versus 48.68 percent for Lavin.
