A CHILEAN AIR FORCE AIRPLANE TAKES OFF FROM A MILITARY BASE IN IQUIQUE.
A Chilean air force airplane takes off from a military base in Iquique, 1800 kms north of Santiago, January 18. The plane, heading to London, is expected to fly former dictator Augusto Pinochet back to Chile in the event that Britain releases on concerns about his health. Pinochet, 84, has been appealing possible extradition to Spain, where a judge wants to try him for allegations of torture during the latter part of his 1973-1990 rule, but Britain said a medical report concluded that he is medically unfit to stand trial.
