FAMILY MEMBERS OF INMATES CRY OUTSIDE PRISON.
Two women comfort each other while mourning the death of 26 inmates outside the prison of Iquique, 1,125 miles north of Santiago, in the early morning of May 21, 2001. According to police, the prisoners burned to death during an overnight riot after fires set in cells by protesting inmates spread out of control. There was no clear motive for the protest at the jail, which holds 1,700 inmates, almost double its 1,000-prisoner capacity.
