THOUSANDS OF DEAD JUMBO FLYING SQUID WASHED UP ON CHILEAN PACIFIC
COAST.
Chileans work to clean up the thousands of dead jumbo flying squid
(Dosidicus Gigas in Latin) that washed up on the beaches of Santa Maria
island after dying in a phenomenon rare to this region, some 580 kilometers
south of Santiago, May 22, 2003. The island's fishermen made a plea to local
authorities for help in clearing the animals from the port, as the density
of carcasses impeded them from navigating out to sea. PICTURE TAKEN MAY 22,
