An undated view of Valparaiso of the Baron hill outdoor elevator, in the port city of Valparaiso, 85 miles northwest of the capital Santiago. Known for its colourful wooden buildings, hills and outdoor elevators, Valparaiso was declared a "World Heritage Site" by UNESCO in Paris on July 2, 2003. In granting the status, the United Nations Education, Sciences and Cultural Organization recognized arguments by the Chilean goverment and independent organizations that Valparaiso is unique for its geography and immigrant history, which lead to the city's unusual architecture and layout.
