Fireworks illuminate the newly-built China Century Monument in west Beijing as Chinese perform lion and dragon dances January 1. Tens of thousands of Chinese took part in the extravaganza to usher in the new millennium at the 200 million yuan ( $24 million) monument which is designed after the Temple of Heaven used by Chinese emperors to perform major ceremonial rites.
