GIANT PANDA PEERS OUT OF A CAGE IN BEIJING.
Giant panda, Da Bao peers out of a small cage as he returns from a visit to the doctor at the Beijing Zoo January 12. Experts say that the giant panda, a symbol of endangered species for much of the 20th century, could provide the first conservation success story of the millennium. The Chinese government estimates that there are only about 1,000 giant pandas left, but recent progress in conservation means that, for the first time in 20 years, the World Wildlife Fund, an international conservation organisation, is confident the panda can now survive in the wild thanks to China's passing a logging ban in the forests where pandas live and increased effectiveness of anti-poaching patrols.
