GIANT PANDA TAKES A NAP IN THE SNOW IN BEIJING.
A giant panda takes a nap in the snow at the Beijing Zoo January 12. Experts say the giant panda, a symbol of endangered species for much of the 20th century, could provide the first conservation success story of the millennium. The Chinese government estimates that there are only about 1,000 giant pandas left, but recent progress in conservation means that, for the first time in 20 years, the World Wildlife Fund, an international conservation organisation, is confident the panda can now survive in the wild. The Chinese government had passed a logging ban in the forests where pandas live and had increased anti-poaching patrols.
