A COLOMBIAN POLICEMAN PATROLS BY THE DEBRIS OF POLICE STATION.
A Colombian policeman patrols in front of the debris of the police station in Carmen de Atrato, August 7, 2000, in the Choco province. Colombian rebels killed 16 in a leftist rebel attack on a police outpost and at a guerrilla roadblock on August 6. Three police agents, three soldiers and two civilians died in an attack on the town of Carmen de Atrato by rebels of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). The attacks were the latest in a string of rebel strikes that have intensified since President Clinton signed a spending law last month providing for $1.3 billion in U.S. aid to help Colombia to fight the drug trade.
