FEATURE COLOMBIA COCAINE.
TO MATCH WITH STORY BC-COLOMBIA COCAINE - A poor peasant, known as a "raspachin", strips coca leaves from this bush in an illegal drug plantation in a remote rebel-held corner of southern Colombia. The high cost of transporting legal produce to market means that most peasants have switched to growing illegal coca leaf and processing it into cocaine base using cement, gasoline and sulfuric acid. Drug dealers then travel to the area to buy the semi-processed powder and then refine it into pure cocaine in clandestine jungle drug laboratories. Picture taken 29DEC99.
