REBELS OF THE FARC PATROL FOR THE DEMILITARIZED ZONE KNOWN AS LA YE IN
CAQUETA PROVINCE.
Rebels of the FARC patrol a road way for the demilitarized zone known
as "La Ye" in Caqueta province, January 11, 2002. President Andres
Pastrana said on Thursday he gave international mediators 48 hours to
meet FARC rebels in a last-ditch effort to save three-year-old peace
talks and avoid all out war. If the efforts fail, the government would
give the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) another 48 hours
starting Saturday night to abandon the towns in a huge demilitarized
enclave Pastrana gave them in late 1998. REUTERS/Eliana Aponte
