Two Papiliu butterflies bred for export fly in the Garden of Butterflies belonging to U.S. citizen Joris Brinkerhoff, in Guacima of Alajuela, 40 kilometers (25 miles) to the northwest of San Jose, January 7. Brinkerhoff specializes in the raising and exportation of butterfly cocoons of more than 40 species from Costa Rica to Europe, Asia, Africa, and the United States. He has sold the cocoons for an average of 3 dollars each for the past 13 years. The Papiliu butterflies are highly requested for export because of their showy colors.
