Plantation owner Diego Cruz removes a seed from an Escobaria cactus plant for propagation, at a plantation in San Ramon de Alajuela, 43 miles (70 km) north of San Jose July 1, 2010. Cruz has 50,000 cactuses with 300 different varieties, and produces more than 7,000 cactuses each month for sale. The cactuses sell for between $5 and $10 each, depending on the size.
