MOUNTAINSIDE IN SOUTHESTERN IRAN WHERE 302 REVOLUTIONARY GUARDS KILLED
IN AIR CRASH.
General view of the rugged peaks of the Sirch mountain range in
southeastern Iran February 20, 2003, where a Russian-made military
plane crashed killing all 302 Revolutionary Guards on board. The crash,
which happened on February 19 was the worst in Iran's history and had
the highest death toll in a string of air disasters in Iran involving
Russian-built aircraft. The Ilyushin-76 troop carrier crashed while
bringing commanders and troops from Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard
from between the southeastern cities of Zahedan and Kerman for 48
hours' leave at home. Officials blames bad weather for the crash.
