PEOPLE WATCH AS COSTA RICAN MEN TRY TO CATCH A CROCODILE DURING
GOOD FRIDAY.
Hundreds of people watch as Costa Rican men try to catch a cocrodile during
the tradition Holy Week in Ortega de Santa Cruz, the north of the capital
San Jose April 18, 2003. Hundreds of people of this small town help catch
the crocodile, while others watch from the riverbank, during Good Friday
celebrations, a tradition going back two hundred years. Traditionally, the
crocodile is sacrificed and is believed to have healing powers. The ritual
also reminds the people of Ortega that the crocodile is the main symbol of
their culture. PP03040057 REUTERS/Juan Carlos Ulate
