Mecklenburg County District Attorney Peter Gilchrist (R) and members of Cherica Adams' family speak to the media, January 22, 2001 after former NFL player Rae Carruth was sentenced to 24 years in prison for his part in the shooting death of his former girlfriend. A North Carolina judge sentenced Carruth, who was acquitted of first-degree murder and avoided a possible death sentence, to between 18 years, 11 months, and 24 years, four months in a state prison for his role in the slaying of Cherica Adams. Carruth, 27, had no visible reaction when the sentence was handed down, ending the 13-week trial.
