CARDINAL BERNARD LAW DELIVERS HOMILY.
Cardinal Bernard Law delivers his appeal homily during Sunday services
in Boston, Massachusetts, May 5, 2002. Law said on Sunday the number of
people claiming they were sexually abused by defrocked priest John
Geoghan had mushroomed to about 150, making a proposed
multimillion-dollar settlement with 86 plaintiffs too expensive. Law's
statement, contained within the homily of his mass at Boston's
Cathedral of the Holy Cross, was an attempt to explain Friday's
surprise decision by the archdiocese's Finance Council to reject the
$15 million to $30 million settlement, reached in March, with victims
of Geoghan. REUTERS/John Bohn-POOL
