PROSECUTORS LISTEN TO FORMER PRIME MINISTER GIULIO ANDREOTTI SPEAKS DURING HIS TRIAL IN PALERMO.
Public Prosecutors Guido Lo Forte (L) and Roberto Scarpinato listen to seven-time Italian prime minister Giulio Andreotti making a final plea during his trial on allegations of links with the Mafia in the Sicilian capital of Palermo October 12. Andreotti spoke calmly for 37 minutes to a hushed courtroom, denying he had had any involvement with the Mob or that he had used any influence to further its cause. He said as an exemple of his crusade to stamp out the Mafia he had fought hard as prime minister in 1989 to prevent convicted mobsters being let out of prison pending appeals.
