JAPANESE POLICE PUSH BACK DEMONSTRATORS IN FRONT OF U.S. EMBASSY IN
Japanese police push back leftist students demonstrators at the gate of
the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo July 19, 2001. About 50 Zengakuren student
union members gathered in front of the embassy to protest the continued
presence of the U.S. military in Japan. Japanese prosecutors on
Thursday charged a U.S. airman with raping a woman on Okinawa, the
latest development in an incident that has fueled local resentment of
the huge U.S. military presence.
