Cuban santeria practitioner shakes maraca for Pope John Paul II.
Eliana, who practices the Afro-Cuban religion Santeria, shakes a maraca, in Havana, April 1, 2005 while praying to her gods for Pope John Paul II underneath photographs of the pontiff taken during his 1998 visit to Cuba. The 84-year-old Pope appeared close to death on Friday after heart failure and breathing problems. Pope John Paul II helped bring down the Berlin Wall, but hardly dented Cuban Communism despite a landmark visit to the island that many thought would open up the Western Hemisphere's last Marxist state. In 1992, however, as Havana began negotiations for a papal visit, atheism was officially dropped. REUTERS/Claudia Daut CD
