As his great uncle Lazaro Gonzalez (R) holds him, Elian Gonzalez (C) says goodbye to school administrators after spending perhaps his final day at a U.S. school January 5. Immigration officials announced today that the six-year-old will be returned to his father in Cuba. Elian has been living with relatives since he was rescued at sea November 25. The boy's mother, stepfather and 10 others died when the boat they were in sank as they attempted to reach the United States from Cuba. His father in Cuba has been in a custody battle with his family in Miami since the failed smuggling operation.
