Canadian Mary McCarthy sits at her desk after finishing lunch at her home in Havana August 8, 2007. At the age of 107, McCarthy is wheelchair-bound, but she still dresses up for visitors in a silk blouse, satin dress and chiffon scarf, and bright red lipstick on her wrinkled face. Her pearl necklace and earrings, though, are plastic. Her real jewelry and the small fortune she inherited when she widowed in 1951 have been frozen in U.S. banks since the United States imposed sanctions on Cuba after Fidel Castro's leftist revolution in 1959.
