Young East Timorese refugees living in Portugal celebrate the announcement of the results of the independence referendum on East Timor September 4. East Timor has voted overwhelmingly for independence from Indonesia, with 78.5 percent of the ballots favouring separation from Jakarta and only 21 percent supporting autonomy under continued Indonesian rule, [Secretary-General Kofi Annan announced at a special night meeting of the Security Council late on Friday. Annan said the vote count was 344,580 against autonomy and thus in favour of independence, and 94,388 for autonomy. The run-up to Monday's vote was marred by violence blamed mainly on militias that oppose severing ties with Indonesia and now control parts of East Timor. ]
