German Finance Minister Hans Eichel frowns during a news conference in Berlin November 4, 2004. Germany announced plans on Thursday to plug an 8.0 billion euro ($10.2 billion) hole in the 2005 federal budget and scrap its unification day holiday in a bid to spur growth. Eichel confirmed the government would shift the October 3 holiday to the first Sunday in October, giving Germany an extra working day, in a move economists say could boost annual growth by 0.1 percent.
