STREET TRADERS IN ACTION IN DOWNTOWN QUITO.
Ecuadorean street traders buy and sell dollars in downtown Quito, January 10. Ecuadoran President Jamil Mahuad, during a nationwide address, announced the "dollarization" of the Ecuadoran economy, fixing an official rate of 25,000 Sucres to the dollar, from 7,000 sucres a year ago. He hopes this will end Ecuador's worst economic crisis in decades. Inflation topped 60 percent last year, the worst in Latin America.
