Recent file photo of Ecuadoran President Lucio Gutierrez praying inside Quito's Catedral church on October 22, 2004. Ecuador's largest opposition group, the Social Christian Party, said on October 25, 2004 that it would try to impeach President Gutierrez and oust him from office for misuse of public funds. Gutierrez, a former army officer who took part in a 2000 coup attempt before winning elections two years ago promising help for the poor, told local media he would not resign. His term runs until January 2007 but his Social Patriotic Party has only five of the 100 seats in the single-chamber Congress. Two Ecuadorean presidents have been overturned amid popular unrest since 1997. The legislative vote on whether or not to go ahead with impeachment could take place in the next few weeks.
