ECUADOREAN POLICEMAN GETS BOOTS SHINED OUTSIDE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE.
An Ecuadorean policeman gets his boots polished as a colleague looks on in cloisters near the Presidential palace in Quito January 16. Ecuador's security forces are still on alert as they wait for indigenous protests programmed for the next 24 hours. Indigenous Ecuadoreans are threatening to cause chaos starting midnight January 16 in response to the economic crisis in their country. Ecuadorean President Jamil Mahuad dolarized his country's economy in an attempt to control galloping inflation a week ago. This drastic measure has met with a mixed response, but has split his opposition and calmed protests which threatened to overthrow him.
