AN ECUADORIAN INDIGENOUS OTAVALO WOMAN CARRIES FLOWERS.
An Ecuadorian indigenous Otavalo woman carries flowers in her arms as she walks down a road near the town of Otavalo, 140 km north of Quito January 15. Indigenous Ecuadorians are threatening to cause chaos staring midnight January 16 in response to the economic crisis in their country. Ecuadorian President Jamil Mahuad dollarized his country's economy in an attempt to control galloping inflation a week ago. This drastic measure has met with a mixed response, but has split his opposition. Mahuad's administration still must face the test of an indigenous people's protest programmed over the next several days and which has led to 30,000 police and soldiers being mobilized to guarantee law and order.
