An Ecuadorian soldier hands a driver back his ID after searching his car at a military roadblock about 100 km south of Quito January 15. Ecuador's military are on alert as indigenous groups are expected to begin protests over the next 48 hours in reponse to their country's economic crisis. President Jamil Mahuad dollarized his country's economy a week ago in an attempt to control galloping inflation that had beset the crisis ridden economy. The drastic measure has split his opposition and has received a cautious welcome internationaly.
