ECUADORIAN PROTESTER HOLDS FLAG WITH BLACK BOW OF MOURNING.
An Ecuadorian protester holds her country's flag with a black bow of mourning attached during a march by thousands of indigenous groups and other organizations through the streets of Quito to protest against the economic crisis their country is suffering January 18. Ecuadorian President Jamil Mahuad dollarized his country's economy in an attempt to control galloping inflation just over a week ago. This drastic measure has met with a mixed response, but has split his opposition and calmed protests which threatened to overthrow him. Indigenous groups still plan protests though and have declared they are beginning a campaign of civil disobediance.
