ECUADOREAN SOLDIERS FORCE INDIGENOUS PROTESTERS OFF TRANSPORT AT CHECKPOINT.
Ecuadorean soldiers force indigenous protesters on their way to Quito off their transport at a checkpoint 30 km south of the capital January 18. Thousands of indigenous Ecuadoreans are descending on the capital to protest against their country's economic crisis, but are being forced to walk by the security forces. Ecuadorean President Jamil Mahuad dolarized his country's economy in an attempt to control galloping inflation just over a week ago. This drastic measure has met with a mixed response, but has split his opposition and calmed protests which threatened to overthrow him. Indigenous groups still plan protests though and have declared they are begining a campaign of civil disobedience.
