A Quito resident sweeps up October 6 volcanic ash that blanketted the city the night before from an explosion in the crater of the Guagua Pichincha volcano, located just 12 kilometers from the city. An estimated 700,000 metric tons of ash fell on the city from a cloud of debris measuring 20 kilometers high and 70 kilometers wide that was thrown up by the volcano.
