A participant paints his face before the traditional "Bolas de Fuego" (Balls of fire) festival in Nejapa...
A participant paints his face before the traditional "Bolas de Fuego" (Balls of fire) festival, in Nejapa, about 12 km (7.5 miles) north to San Salvador August 31, 2010. The festival involves throwing fireballs made of rags, tied up with wire and soaked in diesel fuel. Residents celebrate the tradition dedicated to Saint Geronimo, who fought the devil with fireballs, and to commemorate the eruption of San Salvador's volcano in 1658 which destroyed the first settlement in the village.
