RESCUERS WORK TO CLEAR FIRST ESCAPE HOLE.
Rescuers work to modify a device able to bring up the broken drill bit
and open up the first 36-inch escape hole in an attempt to rescue nine
miners that became trapped by water underground at Quecreek Mine in
Somerset, Pennsylvania, July 26, 2002. The miners were trapped July 24
when the wall of an adjacent, abandoned mine was breached, releasing
more than 50 million gallons of water into the shaft where they were
working. REUTERS/John Sommers II
